Five blocks later, I caught up to the Gellen kid and told him to stop. Neither Solen nor Leana had said a word since the encounter. Both kept one eye on our guide and the other watching for another ambush. The next incident wouldn’t be so harmless.

“What was that, Lobo?”

He faced me, then shrugged, having already picked up some of my human mannerisms. “It’s not safe for a kid to go off with three adults. I had to know who I’m rolling with.”

“Rolling with? Do you even have vehicles with wheels here,” I said as a pair of heavy earthmovers roared down a street nearby. “Forget I asked that, but this is serious. We’re here to find serial killers and cultists, not chip teeth with social workers.”

“Do you want to get the hangar or not? Because there are ways in, and there are ways that get you jammed up,” he said. “By myself, I could just sneak in and out with no problem. But you’re big and draw a lot of attention, especially when lying about being part of the most famous ca-sil in the galaxy.”

I let that go.

“Nothing you said to Hafaxer and his deputies impressed me. You’re just trying to get what you want,” he said.

“Where is that enthusiastic kid who volunteered in front of the other Gellens?” I asked.

“I’m complicated.”

“Obviously.”

“What do you know about kids?”

“More than you think,” I said. “My expertise is in troublesome guides who aren’t as smart or as quick as they think.”

“Hmm. You did move really fast, and so did they.” He nodded at Solen and Leana. “I guess you passed my test, but you’ll still cast me aside when it suits you. That’s what adults do.”

“Take us to the hangar.” I bent to his eye level. “We’re going to have a talk after this. Maybe things will be clearer after we get to know each other better.”

“I hope so.”

Leana smirked at my expense when the kid wasn’t looking.

“We’ll move under the rails for a few blocks, then cut east, and that is where you have to really follow my lead,” Lobo said. “One mistake, and you’ll never reach that ship everyone wants to control.”

No one talked for the next fifteen or twenty minutes. Lobo proved to be a patient and thorough guide. A group of Morvoc’s Disciples passed by one of the kid’s hiding spots. Local security forces followed them and also missed us.

“Give them a second to reach the corner and turn,” Lobo said. “One will stop and look back. Sometimes they wait just out of sight, then peak around the corner.”

“Kayan, can you see us?” I asked. “There are two groups of potential hostiles we want to avoid.”

“There is significant cloud movement today, but I would be able to look between the gaps if not for the tarps and banners on the upper levels of the port. Heat sensors can provide some information, but I am not in a position to provide more than basic optics,” the ship said.

Lobo couldn’t hear us and waited suspiciously.
